Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure sought a detailed explanation from the Pune Municipal Corporation administration on road infrastructure and repair funding after councillors raised the death of a 16-year-old girl in an accident on Katraj-Kondhwa Road. However, the administration’s response at the Pune civic general body meeting did not address the four specific points raised by the mayor, according to a report by Loksatta.
The meeting was held on Thursday at the Hindvi Swarajya auditorium in the Pune Municipal Corporation’s new building, with Nagpure presiding. Members of the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and Shiv Sena (Thackeray) raised the road accident issue at the start of the meeting and questioned the administration over conditions on Katraj-Kondhwa Road.
City engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar presented the administration’s response to the questions raised by councillors. After Pawaskar began the explanation, Nagpure directed the administration to provide clarification on four issues linked to road infrastructure and municipal funding.
The mayor asked how much money would be required to provide roads, footpaths and other essential facilities in the newly incorporated villages within the municipal limits. She also sought details of the provision made for these works in the civic body’s current-year budget.
The other two questions concerned implementation and repairs. Nagpure asked whether it would be possible to construct all the required roads at the same time and how much funding would be needed to repair roads that already exist.
According to the report, the administration spoke for around 45 minutes but did not specifically address the four issues identified by the mayor. This led to criticism during the general body meeting that her directions had not been adequately addressed.
The dispute brings the condition of roads in areas added to the municipal limits into the civic body’s formal budget and administrative discussion. It also places the questions of road repair funding, basic infrastructure in newly incorporated villages and the feasibility of completing works across the city before the administration.
The meeting followed questions from elected members after the fatal accident involving the 16-year-old girl on Katraj-Kondhwa Road. The report did not provide details of the accident, the road’s repair schedule, the exact budget allocation or any revised timeline for responding to the mayor’s questions.
The immediate issue before the civic administration is therefore to provide the requested figures on infrastructure requirements, current-year budget provisions, the feasibility of simultaneous road construction and the funds required for repairs.
