The Maharashtra government has made available Rs 170 crore for 104 coastal infrastructure works across Mumbai and the Konkan region, including jetties, approach roads, protective walls, erosion-control structures, dredging and passenger facilities, according to a report by Loksatta. The projects cover Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.
The allocation is divided between two categories of work. A total of Rs 126 crore has been provided for 75 projects involving jetties and related passenger facilities. Another Rs 44 crore has been earmarked for 29 works connected to roads leading to ports, rail links and backwater development.
The funding is linked to the Maharashtra Maritime Board’s scheme for providing assistance grants, floating jetties and related passenger infrastructure. Under the scheme, Rs 577.53 crore has been approved for 75 works. Of this amount, Rs 133.92 crore had been distributed by the end of March 2026, while a further Rs 126 crore has been provided for 2026-27, the report said.
The projects include works in several locations around Mumbai and the wider metropolitan region. These include a protective wall at Colaba-Gitanganagar, the Khar-Danda area and the Belapur passenger jetty. Jetty and approach-road works are also included in Dombivli, Uttan and parts of Thane district.
Progress varies among the Mumbai-area projects. Work at Colaba has been completed, while 40 per cent of the work at Belapur remains pending, according to the report. The allocation is intended to advance these works along with other coastal infrastructure projects covered by the government’s funding decision.
Palghar district projects listed in the report include jetty and passenger-facility works at Vasai Fort, Naigaon, the Vasai roll-on/roll-off jetty, Narangi and the Arnala Fort area. The height-extension work at the Naigaon Benkar jetty has been completed.
The funding also covers coastal works in Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, although the report does not provide a project-wise expenditure or completion schedule for all 104 works. It also does not specify a common completion deadline for the projects.
The approved works combine marine infrastructure with the land-side connections needed to reach it. Alongside jetty construction, the programme includes roads, rail connectivity, backwater-related works, shoreline protection and dredging. The next stages will depend on project-level execution and the release and utilisation of the sanctioned funds by the Maharashtra Maritime Board and the concerned authorities.
