Bengaluru traffic police have submitted a proposal to the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) seeking new flyovers and underpasses at 25 locations to ease congestion across the city, according to a report by Vijay Karnataka published on September 10, 2026.
The proposal was sent by Bengaluru City Traffic Division Joint Commissioner Karthik Reddy to the GBA chief commissioner. It calls for grade-separated infrastructure at congested junctions, railway underpasses and key road corridors where traffic volumes have continued to rise.
The report said Bengaluru has nearly 1.50 crore registered vehicles, with more than 2,000 new vehicles being added each day. Vehicles from neighbouring districts and states also enter the city daily, increasing pressure on the road network. The traffic police have identified 11 high-density corridors, including Ballari Road, Old Madras Road, Old Airport Road, Sarjapur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Kanakapura Road, Mysuru Road, Magadi Road, Tumakuru Road, West of Chord Road and the Outer Ring Road.
Traffic authorities have also identified 246 junctions with high congestion. The locations proposed for flyovers or underpasses include the Pottery Road railway underpass, Lingarajapuram railway underpass, Nagawara Junction, the corridor between Pottery Junction and Nagawara Junction, Jayanthinagar near Banaswadi, Bhattarahalli near K.R. Puram, Kundalahalli Road near the Vibgyor U-turn, K.R. Puram railway station, Phoenix Mall Junction and Big Bazaar Junction in Mahadevapura.
Other locations named in the proposal include Binnimill railway gate on Magadi Road, S.M. Circle at Jalahalli Cross, Chokkasandra at T. Dasarahalli Junction, Hesaraghatta Cross, CMTI Junction on Tumakuru Road, Hebbal Junction on the Outer Ring Road, NES Junction in Yelahanka, Sadahalli Gate near Chikkajala, the stretch from the K2 bus stop in Sanjayanagar to Hebbal Junction, Bharatiya City Junction in Hennur, Sarakki Junction, J.D. Mara Junction and Iblur Junction.
The traffic police have sought several additional measures alongside the proposed structures. These include 2,340 traffic signboards, thermoplastic lane markings at 707 locations, removal of scientifically unsuitable speed breakers, drainage improvements at 137 waterlogging spots, relocation of 103 bus stops, construction of 63 new bus bays, more than 100 skywalks and multi-level parking facilities at 66 locations.
The proposal comes as the city continues to expand its Metro network, increase public transport services and widen roads. The traffic police report said congestion remains a persistent problem because of rising vehicle ownership, narrow roads, ongoing construction, inadequate parking and limited dependence on public transport. Major congestion is routinely reported on the Silk Board–Electronic City corridor, Marathahalli, Whitefield, Hebbal, K.R. Puram, Bannerghatta Road, Tumakuru Road and Mysuru Road.
The city already has 42 flyovers and 28 underpasses, while additional projects are under construction. The state government has also approved 11 elevated corridors with a combined length of 75.60 km at an estimated cost of Rs 13,262.70 crore. Tenders have been invited for elevated corridor works on some roads.
The traffic police have further reported that adaptive traffic control systems are already installed at 169 signals. Administrative approval has been granted for adaptive signals at another 110 junctions, with an estimated cost of Rs 56.45 crore for implementation and five years of maintenance. The tender process for that project is currently under way.
