Kalyan Hospital Assault: Doctor’s Attacker Arrested After 17 Days

A 30-year-old man accused of assaulting an orthopaedic doctor inside a private hospital in Kalyan East was arrested on Wednesday, 17 days after the incident, police said. Vinit Jaywant Deshmukh was detained in Ulhasnagar and later produced before a Kalyan court, which remanded him to police custody until Thursday.

The assault took place on the night of August 23 at Bhanujyot Hospital. According to Kolsewadi police, Dr Yogendra Jaiswal, 41, was attending to Deshmukh’s father, Jaywant Deshmukh, who was receiving treatment for a rib fracture.

Police said Vinit Deshmukh became aggressive during a discussion about his father’s treatment. He allegedly punched Jaiswal after the doctor asked him to speak politely. The incident occurred inside the doctor’s consultation cabin and was recorded on the hospital’s CCTV cameras.

Other hospital staff and relatives intervened after the commotion and helped rescue the doctor, according to the report. The assault led to protests by local medical associations, after which Kolsewadi police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions relating to voluntarily causing hurt.

The accused remained at large after the case was registered. Police said their team used technical surveillance and information from tipoffs to trace him to the jurisdiction of Vithalwadi police station in Ulhasnagar.

“Based on technical surveillance and tipoffs, our team tracked down Vinit from Vithalwadi police station’s jurisdiction in Ulhasnagar and placed him under arrest on Wednesday,” Nitin Pagar, senior police inspector at Kolsewadi police station, said.

The arrest followed a 17-day gap between the alleged assault and the accused’s detention. The court’s police custody order was scheduled to remain in effect until Thursday. Further proceedings will depend on the investigation and the next court directions.
