Mumbai’s JJ Hospital has completed 301 robotic surgeries in about 18 months since introducing the technology in April 2025, marking a significant expansion of advanced surgical care within Maharashtra’s public healthcare system. Medtronic has recognised the hospital as a Centre of Excellence for its robotic surgery programme.
The robotic surgery facility was established at an investment of ₹32 crore by the state’s Medical Education Department. The hospital performed its first robotic procedure on April 9, 2025. Since then, its teams have used the system for procedures across general surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynaecology.
The operations reported by the hospital include gallbladder removal, rectopexy, fundoplication, choledochal cyst surgery, thymectomy, abdominal wall reconstruction and pancreaticojejunostomy. The range includes both routine and complex procedures, according to the report published by Loksatta – Mumbai.
Robotic surgery systems allow surgeons to operate using a magnified three-dimensional view and instruments designed for precise movement and control. The technology can support minimally invasive procedures involving smaller incisions. JJ Hospital said the programme has enabled patients from Maharashtra and other parts of the country to access such procedures at a government hospital.
The programme has involved coordination between surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, operating-theatre staff and other healthcare workers. The general surgery robotic team includes hospital dean and professor Dr Ajay Bhandarwar, along with surgeons and supporting medical staff. The hospital’s urology and gynaecology departments have also contributed to the programme.
The Centre of Excellence recognition was attributed to the hospital’s growing expertise in robotic surgery, multidisciplinary coordination, training and education. The recognition comes as public hospitals seek to expand access to technologies that have traditionally been concentrated in private or specialist healthcare facilities.
The hospital’s reported milestone also places emphasis on the institutional requirements of robotic surgery, including trained teams, operating-theatre coordination and experience across medical departments. The technology itself is only one part of the programme; its use requires surgeons and support staff to work through specialised clinical and technical processes.
JJ Hospital has not provided, in the reported information, a department-wise breakdown of the 301 procedures, patient outcomes, procedure costs or waiting-time changes.
