Thane Municipal Corporation has proposed starting a free CBSE school in a seven-storey building at Kavesar in the Ghodbunder area, with the plan now placed before the civic body’s general assembly for approval. The proposed school would serve students from pre-primary to Class 10 and is intended to expand access to the Central Board of Secondary Education curriculum for children from ordinary-income families.
The proposal concerns a school-reserved plot under the Majiwada-Manpada ward committee. The Thane civic body has possession of 3,580 square metres of land at the site, where a ground-plus-seven-storey building with a built-up area of 4,113.85 square metres has been constructed. The building has been handed over to the municipal education department.
According to the proposal, the civic administration considers the site compliant with the space requirements for a CBSE school. The campus is expected to include a library, science laboratory, computer room and mathematics laboratory. Separate rooms and halls for dance, music, art and sports have also been proposed. A playground is available next to the school building.
The building is planned to have drinking-water facilities on every floor and separate toilets for boys and girls. Students are expected to receive books, uniforms, educational material and school nutrition meals free of cost, in line with facilities provided to students in other municipal schools. The education department will provide furniture, benches, projectors, television sets and other required equipment.
The municipal administration has proposed inviting expressions of interest from organisations willing to operate the school. The selected organisation would be responsible for appointing teachers and non-teaching staff with the required educational qualifications, as well as managing staff salaries and school administration.
The civic body has also stated that it will undertake the process of obtaining the required permissions and no-objection certificates from the Maharashtra government. The proposal to invite interested organisations has been placed before the general assembly for approval, meaning the operating agency, start date and admission process have not yet been finalised in the material currently available.
The Kavesar proposal follows the launch of a municipal CBSE-affiliated school in Kharegaon under the Kalwa ward committee for the 2026-27 academic year. The Kharegaon school is reported to have received a strong response. Following that response, Thane mayor Sharmila Pimpolkar proposed that a CBSE school be established in each ward, while several councillors also reportedly supported the expansion of such schools.
Thane Municipal Corporation currently operates 102 primary schools across Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and English mediums. Of these, 11 English-medium schools operate on a self-financed basis and follow the Maharashtra State Board curriculum. The Kavesar proposal would add a municipal school following the CBSE curriculum to this network.
The next step is for the general assembly to consider the proposal to seek expressions of interest. Further details on the selected operating institution, government permissions, admissions and the school’s opening schedule will depend on subsequent approvals and administrative action.
