A dispute over littering at a petrol pump in Virar West allegedly escalated into an assault on an employee on Sunday evening, after members of a women’s Govinda group travelling from Mumbai stopped to refuel a bus, according to a report by Loksatta. Police intervened after the confrontation continued for nearly two hours and a petrol pump employee was injured.
The incident took place at the Manvel petrol pump in the Vatar area of Virar West. The group had travelled to a resort in Navapur for a picnic after participating in Dahi Handi celebrations held across Maharashtra on Saturday. The group reportedly included women, children and senior citizens.
At about 7 pm on Sunday, the bus stopped at the petrol pump to fill diesel. During the stop, an empty biscuit wrapper was allegedly thrown out of the bus. A petrol pump employee asked the women involved not to discard waste outside and to pick it up, triggering an argument between the group and the employee.
According to the report, some women then got off the bus and questioned the employee. The exchange reportedly led to pushing and a confrontation. The petrol pump owner intervened and attempted to settle the dispute, after which the situation appeared to calm temporarily.
The confrontation allegedly resumed later when a young man from the bus assaulted the employee. Other petrol pump workers are reported to have taken the bus keys and informed the police after the employee was injured and began bleeding. Local residents also gathered at the site as the disturbance continued.
Police from the Arnala Coastal Police Station arrived after receiving information about the incident. The injured person was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to the report. The police reportedly mediated between the two sides and brought the immediate confrontation under control.
Members of the Govinda group gave a different account of the dispute. They claimed that the petrol pump employee had spoken inappropriately to a senior citizen travelling with them, leading to the argument. The report does not establish the allegation independently.
The incident occurred at a busy roadside fuel facility used by public and private vehicles, where disputes can quickly affect workers, passengers and other motorists.
