At least 56 Govindas were injured during Dahi Handi celebrations in Thane, with participants treated at the District Government Hospital in Thane and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, according to a hospital record prepared on September 5.
The record lists 22 injured participants at the District Government Hospital and 34 at the Kalwa hospital. The reported injuries ranged from bruises and pain to leg fractures, head injuries and injuries involving the limbs, shoulders, chest, back and neck.
Two Govindas treated at the District Government Hospital, identified as 25-year-old Girish Chipkar and 25-year-old Omkar Shinde, sustained fractures to their right legs. Both were from the CP Talao area of Wagle. Other cases recorded at the hospital included back, hand, leg, knee and shoulder injuries, as well as chest pain and bruising.
The hospital record also lists a seizure suffered by 17-year-old Prathamesh Giri, from Indira Nagar in Wagle Estate. A 32-year-old participant, Amit Kadam, was treated for a bruise to his right ankle, while 26-year-old Dipesh Naik was reported to have experienced dizziness. Several Govindas from Jogeshwari were also treated for injuries to their legs, shoulders and chest.
At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, the 34 injured participants included people with injuries to their heads, shoulders, legs and hands. The record lists a head injury suffered by 65-year-old Nandkishor Shelar of Thane. Three younger participants—11-year-old Dinesh Bhosale, 11-year-old Samrat Bhangare and 12-year-old Ayush Vansh—were also treated.
Bhosale, from Jai Bhim Nagar in Kalwa, suffered an injury to his lip. Bhangare, from Digha in Navi Mumbai, sustained an injury to his left shoulder, while Vansh, from Shantinagar in Kalwa, suffered an injury to his right leg. The record also lists head injuries involving 58-year-old Riyansh Sheikh, 30-year-old Sanjit Verma and 16-year-old Ansh Mishra.
Other injuries recorded at the Kalwa hospital included injuries to the waist, neck, back, shoulders, knees, hands and legs. Ajay Kamble, 38, suffered a chest injury, while 24-year-old Mohammad Kaif sustained an injury to his right knee.
The injured participants came from several areas across Thane and Mumbai, including Kalwa, Wagle Estate, Kisan Nagar, Balkum, Jogeshwari, Vikhroli and Goregaon, as well as Bandra and Navi Mumbai. The record does not provide details about the circumstances of each injury or the subsequent medical condition of those treated.
The combined figure of 56 injured Govindas covers the participants listed in the records of the two hospitals.
