Pimpri-Chinchwad police have frozen immovable property worth ₹55.16 lakh that investigators say was acquired with proceeds from drug trafficking, in a case registered at the Sangvi police station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.
The property is linked to alleged gang leader Junaid Afzal Khan and his wife, Fauzia Khan. According to the police action reported on Saturday, the couple purchased three gunthas, or about 3,000 square feet, in Survey No. 2274 at Garade village in Purandar taluka, Pune district, and carried out construction on the land.
The action followed the seizure of 55.29 grams of mephedrone, commonly known as MD, from accused persons in the Sangvi case. After MCOCA provisions were invoked, the police began examining the accused persons’ financial assets as part of the investigation into the alleged drug network.
Investigators concluded that the property, valued at ₹55.16 lakh, represented disproportionate assets generated from illegal drug proceeds. The police subsequently submitted a proposal to the competent authority in Mumbai seeking action under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act.
During the proceedings, the accused persons were reportedly unable to produce documents showing that the property had been purchased through legitimate income. The competent authority approved the action, allowing the property to be frozen under Section 68F(1) of the NDPS Act.
The freeze prevents the property from being sold or otherwise transferred without prior permission from the competent authority. The measure does not amount to an immediate transfer of ownership to the state; it restricts transactions involving the asset while proceedings under the law continue.
Police Commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey is overseeing the action, which the police described as the first major seizure or freezing operation of its kind in Pune district in 2026. The crime branch carried out the financial investigation under the commissioner’s direction.
The case reflects the police’s effort to target the financial assets associated with alleged narcotics networks, in addition to investigating the movement and distribution of drugs. The police have indicated that similar legal action will be pursued against property and assets allegedly created from drug-related income.
The property will remain subject to restrictions under the NDPS Act and cannot be sold or transferred without approval from the competent authority in Mumbai.
