Hyderabad Monsoon Rains Likely To Ease From September 4
HYDERABAD: The city and Telangana could see a temporary reduction in monsoon activity from September 4, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating no major weather warning for the state over the following days. However, isolated rain and thunderstorms may still occur in Hyderabad, making the change more of a lull than a complete end to the monsoon spell.
The latest IMD warning bulletin shows thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds for September 3, while no warning has been issued for September 4 and the days that follow through September 8. The Hyderabad city forecast also continues to indicate partly cloudy conditions with a possibility of rain or thunderstorms. This suggests that residents may experience fewer widespread showers, although localised spells cannot be ruled out. For commuters, the easing could bring some relief from waterlogged roads and weather-related travel disruptions. Yet, sudden thunderstorms and short-duration rain can still affect traffic during the afternoon and evening. The expected break comes at a time when Telangana is already facing a significant seasonal rainfall deficit. The state has recorded 476.8 mm of rainfall during the southwest monsoon against a normal 592.7 mm, leaving the cumulative figure around 20 per cent below normal.
The wider September outlook also points towards below-normal rainfall across much of the country, with strengthening El Niño conditions being identified as an important factor behind the changing monsoon pattern. For Telangana, the impact extends beyond daily weather conditions. Rainfall remains important for agriculture, groundwater recharge, reservoirs and urban water management. A prolonged reduction in showers could therefore have different effects depending on local water availability and rainfall distribution. At the same time, a short dry period could help civic agencies address drainage issues and allow waterlogged stretches to recover. It may also provide residents with easier road access after recent wet-weather disruptions. The Hyderabad monsoon rains are not expected to disappear completely. IMD forecasts continue to show the possibility of isolated rain or thunderstorms in the city. The current outlook therefore points towards reduced rainfall intensity rather than a clear end to the rainy season.
For residents, the priority remains preparedness for sudden weather changes. Drivers should remain cautious during thunderstorms, while civic agencies need to continue monitoring vulnerable roads, drainage points and low-lying areas. The coming days will also be important for understanding whether the rainfall reduction is temporary or becomes part of a broader dry spell. With Telangana already carrying a sizeable seasonal deficit, the distribution of whatever rain arrives next could matter as much as the total rainfall itself.
