HYDERABAD: The Saidabad Santosh Nagar flyover is set to open on Thursday, September 3, adding a major elevated connection between Nalgonda X Roads and Owaisi Hospital Junction. The four-lane corridor is expected to reduce delays along one of South Hyderabad’s busy traffic routes.
The project stretches about 3.32 km and has 88 spans. It forms a signal-free route through Chanchalguda, Saidabad and IS Sadan. The corridor is designed to separate through traffic from several busy junction movements, which can help make journeys more predictable for daily commuters. The immediate challenge for commuters will come before the benefits of the new infrastructure are fully felt. Hyderabad Traffic Police has announced restrictions from 2 pm to 7 pm on September 3 during the inauguration. The road between Saidabad Y Junction and Nalgonda X Road will remain closed during the programme. Traffic is expected to build up on surrounding roads, so commuters using this corridor have been advised to avoid the affected stretch during these hours. Vehicles travelling from Nalgonda X Road towards Saidabad, Santosh Nagar and IS Sadan will be diverted through Malakpet Gunj, Moosarambagh, Gaddiannaram and routes towards Champapet.
Traffic moving from IS Sadan towards Nalgonda X Road will be diverted through Saidabad, Sankeshwar Bazar and Gaddiannaram before rejoining the main route. Separate diversions have also been announced for vehicles approaching from Mirchowk and Dabeerpura. The Saidabad Santosh Nagar flyover is expected to have a wider effect than simply reducing waiting time at signals. The elevated corridor connects several important residential and commercial areas and provides an alternative to congested surface-level intersections. Current travel through the corridor can take around 35 minutes during heavy congestion. Project estimates suggest this could fall to roughly five to eight minutes once the route is operational. The structure includes a 2.63-km main viaduct and a 200-metre up-ramp from IS Sadan Junction. For residents, the larger question will be whether faster movement on the elevated road also improves conditions on the roads below. Junction management, pedestrian access and traffic distribution will remain important as vehicles adjust to the new network.
From a sustainability perspective, smoother traffic flow can also reduce unnecessary idling when congestion is effectively managed. However, the long-term impact will depend on how well surrounding roads, junctions and public transport connections work with the new corridor. The Saidabad Santosh Nagar flyover therefore represents more than a new elevated road. Its success will depend on whether it improves everyday travel while creating a better-connected and more manageable urban transport network for South Hyderabad.
