Hyderabad Steps Up Civic Preparations for Ganesh Utsav
HYDERABAD: Hyderabad is stepping up civic preparations for Ganesh Utsav 2026, with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) reviewing arrangements for processions and idol immersions across the city. The focus is on roads, sanitation, lighting, traffic management and public facilities, as thousands of devotees are expected to participate in the celebrations.
A coordination meeting was held between senior GHMC officials and representatives of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi at the civic body’s head office. Officials reviewed preparations at major immersion locations and discussed the requirements expected during the festival. The Balapur-Tank Bund procession route has been finalised as part of the arrangements. The route is likely to see significant movement during the celebrations, making traffic management and pedestrian safety important considerations for civic authorities. The GHMC plans to deploy additional personnel and machinery at key immersion points. Cranes will be arranged to assist with idol immersion, while barricading and lighting are also being planned at locations expected to experience heavy footfall. Basic public facilities will receive attention as well. Mobile toilets and drinking water arrangements are planned near major immersion points. Such facilities will be important for devotees, workers and residents who may spend several hours around procession and immersion areas.
Road conditions are another priority. Officials have been directed to complete pending repairs before the festival. Tree pruning and streetlight maintenance are also included in the preparations. The civic response will involve coordination between multiple agencies. The GHMC control room is expected to work with Hyderabad City Police, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) and other departments during the celebrations. For a city as densely populated as Hyderabad, large public festivals can place considerable pressure on roads, sanitation systems and public spaces. Temporary arrangements therefore need to account not only for the movement of processions but also for residents, businesses, emergency services and public transport. Environmental concerns are also part of this year’s preparations. Civic authorities have encouraged devotees to use clay-based Ganesh idols, which can reduce the environmental impact associated with immersion activities.
The push for more environmentally responsible celebrations is particularly relevant for Hyderabad’s lakes and other water bodies. Idol immersion can place additional pressure on these ecosystems when non-biodegradable materials and unsuitable substances enter the water. The festival preparations therefore extend beyond managing crowds for a few days. They also raise broader questions about how Hyderabad can accommodate major cultural events while protecting public infrastructure and natural resources. With pending civic works being prioritised, the effectiveness of the arrangements will depend on timely execution and coordination across agencies. Safe routes, accessible public facilities, efficient waste management and environmentally responsible immersion practices will remain central to ensuring that the celebrations cause minimal disruption to the city.
