Pune’s railway network is set for temporary service changes as infrastructure work at Pune and Hadapsar yards enters a critical commissioning phase. Seven trains linked to the Bilaspur zone will face route diversions, delays or changes in their terminating stations during the works. The disruption highlights the short-term passenger cost of expanding rail capacity in one of Maharashtra’s busiest urban corridors.
The work involves pre-non-interlocking and non-interlocking operations required to commission a third railway line at the two yards. Such work is essential for integrating new tracks with signalling and existing railway infrastructure. While these interventions can improve operational capacity over time, they often require trains to be diverted or regulated while the network is being reconfigured. Among the affected services is the Pune–Howrah Duronto Express. On September 19 and October 3, the service is scheduled to use an alternative corridor through Lonavala, Karjat, Panvel, Kalyan, Igatpuri and Manmad before continuing towards Howrah. The corresponding Howrah–Pune service will also follow a revised route on October 3. Another significant change concerns the Hatia–Pune Express. On October 2, the service will terminate at Daund instead of Pune. Its return journey on October 4 will originate from Daund rather than Pune, requiring passengers travelling to or from the city to account for the altered endpoint.
Several other services will experience revised departure timings. The Pune–Howrah Duronto is scheduled to leave 1 hour 45 minutes late on September 21. The Pune–Howrah Express faces delays ranging from 30 minutes to nearly two hours on specified September and October dates. The Hadapsar–Rewa Express is also expected to depart later than its normal schedule on September 24 and October 1. For commuters, the impact extends beyond punctuality. Pune and Hadapsar stations serve large residential, employment and educational catchments, while long-distance trains connect the city with major economic centres. Sudden changes can therefore affect connecting bus journeys, work schedules and onward rail travel.
From an infrastructure perspective, the third line is more than a construction intervention. Additional track capacity can help separate train movements, reduce operational conflicts and create greater flexibility as passenger and freight demand grows. However, the benefits will depend on how effectively the upgraded infrastructure is integrated with signalling, station capacity and surrounding urban transport. Passengers travelling on the affected dates should verify their train status before leaving for the station through official railway enquiry channels. For Pune, the immediate priority is managing the disruption clearly while ensuring that the capacity created through the upgrade translates into more reliable rail operations once the work is complete.
