Hyderabad Moosarambagh Bridge Opens to Ease Traffic
HYDERABAD, August 31: A new high-level bridge across the Musi River at Moosarambagh is set to open on Monday, creating a direct connection between Moosarambagh and Amberpet. The ₹52-crore project is expected to ease pressure on existing routes while providing a safer alternative when rising river levels disrupt the older low-level crossing.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is scheduled to inaugurate the bridge on August 31. The opening follows a final inspection by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation officials, who reviewed the approaches, lighting, pedestrian facilities and other works before traffic is allowed onto the structure. The Moosarambagh bridge is 400 metres long and 14.5 metres wide. It also includes footpaths measuring 3.5 metres in width, providing dedicated space for pedestrians. The infrastructure is expected to improve connectivity between Amberpet and Moosarambagh and reduce travel times on surrounding routes. The project’s importance extends beyond daily traffic movement. The existing low-level crossing has historically been vulnerable to flooding when the Musi rises. A higher structure can help maintain connectivity during such episodes, reducing the need for traffic diversions.
This is particularly relevant as Hyderabad faces more intense rainfall and recurring waterlogging challenges. A resilient transport network needs critical crossings to remain functional during extreme weather rather than forcing commuters onto longer alternative routes. The bridge was proposed after repeated flooding affected movement through the area. Its foundation stone was laid on September 24, 2023. Construction subsequently faced delays linked to road widening and other project requirements. Reports also indicate that flood flows affected construction activity during 2024 and 2025. Road access around major bridges is as important as the bridge structure itself. GHMC officials had directed teams to complete approach roads, safety measures, lighting and pedestrian infrastructure before opening the facility. This reflects the need to treat bridges as part of a wider mobility corridor rather than isolated structures.
The project is also being completed in stages. The completed section is expected to carry traffic while construction continues on the remaining side, which is planned for completion next year. This phased approach allows connectivity to improve before the entire project is finished. For nearby residents and businesses, the new crossing could shorten journeys and improve access between neighbourhoods on either side of the Musi. Better connectivity can also support local commercial activity by reducing travel friction. The longer-term test, however, will be the bridge’s performance during heavy rainfall and peak traffic. Regular structural checks, effective drainage and well-managed approaches will be important to ensure the investment delivers reliable, climate-resilient connectivity for Hyderabad.
