Pune Water Supply Faces Daylong Maintenance Shutdown
Pune residents across several western and central neighbourhoods will face a planned water supply interruption on August 27 as the civic body undertakes electrical, pumping and associated maintenance at multiple installations. The shutdown will affect parts of Kothrud, Warje, Karvenagar, Aundh, Baner, Balewadi, Pashan, Bavdhan and Wakad, highlighting the dependence of a rapidly expanding city on ageing and interconnected water infrastructure.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has scheduled the maintenance from midnight on August 26 until midnight on August 27. Facilities involved include the HLR tank, Bhama Askhed-linked infrastructure, Warje water centre, Chandani Chowk tank, Gandhi Bhavan tank and Pashan Club GSR tank, along with associated pumping systems. The disruption will not necessarily be uniform across the affected network. Neighbourhoods connected to different reservoirs and pumping installations could experience varying levels of interruption, while some locations may receive water at reduced pressure. The civic administration has also indicated that certain areas could experience lower supply on August 28 as the system returns to normal operating conditions. For households, the immediate concern is continuity of essential services. Residents who depend on municipal supply for drinking, cooking, sanitation and other daily needs will need to plan around the interruption. The impact could be more significant for apartment complexes, small businesses, healthcare facilities and institutions that have limited on-site storage.
The shutdown also points to a larger infrastructure challenge for Pune. Water networks must increasingly serve a city that has expanded well beyond its traditional core, with major residential and employment growth across western corridors such as Baner, Balewadi, Bavdhan and Wakad. For Pune, this could reduce the scale of future shutdowns while improving the network’s ability to respond to equipment failures and extreme weather.
