HYDERABAD: Residents of Allwyn Colony in Kukatpally are seeking repairs to stretches damaged during sewer infrastructure work, with sewage accumulation and rain adding to mobility and public-health concerns. The problem is particularly significant around routes used by schoolchildren, highlighting how incomplete local infrastructure can undermine safety and liveability even as Hyderabad continues to expand rapidly.
Several internal roads across Phase-1 and Phase-2 reportedly remain uneven after sections were excavated for sewer manholes. Residents say portions of the work have been completed underground, but the road surfaces have not been restored adequately. Recent rainfall has compounded the problem, leaving some stretches difficult for pedestrians, two-wheeler users and motorists. One of the reported trouble spots is around Shivanagar X Road and Jalakanya Hotel in Phase-1. Another is near Sandhya Sarovar in Aditya Nagar, where residents say school-going children regularly use the affected roads. A separate lane close to a school in Tulasi Nagar has also reportedly experienced stagnant water after rainwater mixed with sewage. The issue extends beyond road quality. Standing wastewater can create mosquito-breeding conditions, unpleasant odours and hygiene concerns, while broken surfaces increase the risk of falls and vehicle-related accidents. For households, these deficiencies also carry an everyday economic cost through longer journeys, vehicle damage and reduced accessibility.
The concerns come as the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation has increasingly focused on pedestrian access and neighbourhood-level civic infrastructure. In June, the civic body conducted inspections in Allwyn Colony and nearby areas, reviewing drainage, road and sanitation requirements with resident groups. The corporation has also undertaken pedestrian-access measures in Allwyn Colony. A recent enforcement drive removed obstructions from public spaces in the area as part of wider efforts to improve movement across Cyberabad. For urban infrastructure, however, accessibility depends on more than clearing footpaths. Allwyn Colony road repairs also need coordination between drainage, sewerage and road agencies so that newly restored surfaces are not repeatedly excavated. A properly sequenced approach could reduce disruption, improve the durability of public spending and make neighbourhood streets more resilient during heavy rain.
The immediate priority is therefore to inspect the affected stretches, address sewage and drainage problems and restore damaged carriageways. For a growing metropolitan region, timely maintenance of established neighbourhoods is as important as building new infrastructure, particularly where homes, schools and daily services share constrained local streets.
