Gujarat Quantum Infrastructure Gains Rs 25 Crore Centre
Gujarat is adding a new layer to its technology infrastructure with a proposed Rs 25 crore Quantum Centre of Excellence at Pandit Deendayal Energy University in Gandhinagar. The facility will include an 8-qubit superconducting quantum computer and supporting systems, creating specialised research infrastructure for students and researchers. The development matters because Gujarat’s industrial economy is increasingly tied to energy, manufacturing and advanced technology, where future computing capacity could become strategically important.
The centre follows a memorandum of understanding between PDEU and QpiAI and is expected to provide an on-campus quantum computing facility alongside software, application libraries and research tools. The proposed infrastructure is aligned with the objectives of India’s National Quantum Mission, which seeks to strengthen domestic capabilities in quantum computing, communications, sensing and related technologies.From an urban infrastructure perspective, the project is notable because advanced computing facilities require a different physical ecosystem from conventional university laboratories. Superconducting quantum systems operate in highly controlled environments and depend on specialised cooling, control electronics, shielding and computing infrastructure. This makes the development less about installing a single machine and more about establishing a specialised technology facility within the city’s existing research network.
The potential economic relevance extends beyond the university campus. PDEU has identified areas including renewable energy, green hydrogen, advanced energy materials, batteries and energy storage for possible research applications. These sectors are already connected to Gujarat’s industrial and infrastructure development, creating an opportunity for quantum research to address problems involving materials, optimisation and complex energy systems as the technology matures.However, the immediate impact should be viewed realistically. An 8-qubit system represents an early-stage research and learning platform rather than infrastructure capable of replacing conventional high-performance computing. Practical, large-scale quantum applications remain under development, making access to skilled researchers, sustained funding and supporting computing infrastructure as important as the hardware itself.
For Gujarat, the larger infrastructure question is whether such specialised facilities can become part of a broader, accessible technology ecosystem rather than isolated institutional assets. Gujarat quantum infrastructure will have greater long-term value if universities, researchers and emerging industries can use these capabilities to develop applications relevant to energy efficiency, resilient systems and resource management. The next phase will therefore depend on how effectively the new facility connects research, skills and real-world urban and industrial needs.
