The cooler conditions offered residents a brief break from recent humidity, while also highlighting how strongly monsoon rainfall can influence the city’s thermal environment and daily urban life.
The Regional Meteorological Centre recorded 8.1 mm of rainfall at Alipore by Monday evening. The maximum temperature was 1.5°C below the seasonal normal and marked a fall from 33.4°C recorded on Sunday.A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal was responsible for the unsettled weather. Although the system was moving towards Jharkhand, meteorological authorities expected another spell of similar rain over Kolkata on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall was not expected, though isolated light to moderate showers remained possible.For a dense city such as Kolkata, the effect of rain extends beyond a temporary fall in temperature. Cloud cover reduces incoming solar radiation, while rainfall can briefly cool exposed roads, buildings and other hard urban surfaces. These effects can improve outdoor thermal conditions, particularly for pedestrians, street vendors, transport workers and others whose daily activities are closely tied to the weather.
The immediate relief, however, should not be interpreted as a lasting shift in Kolkata’s heat conditions. Weather records for August show that the city continues to experience considerable warmth, with average temperatures remaining elevated during the month. When intense showers coincide with limited drainage capacity, impermeable surfaces and low-lying neighbourhoods, the same weather system that lowers temperatures can increase the risk of waterlogging and disruption. For city planners, the priority is therefore not simply to manage rainfall when it arrives, but to strengthen drainage, retain natural water pathways and expand permeable and shaded urban spaces.
Kolkata’s latest spell of Kolkata rain offers a useful reminder of this wider connection between weather and urban design. Cooler streets can improve short-term comfort, but resilient neighbourhoods need infrastructure capable of handling both heat and excess water. As monsoon conditions continue, the focus will remain on how rainfall develops across the city and whether the temporary Kolkata rain relief is followed by renewed heat and humidity.
