Kolkata Fuel Prices Hold Steady Amid Oil Volatility

Kolkata motorists are starting the week with no change in petrol or diesel prices, even as global crude markets remain unsettled. Petrol is priced at ₹113.51 a litre and diesel at ₹99.82 a litre in the city on August 24. The stability offers short-term predictability for commuters and businesses, but international oil movements could still influence transport costs and inflation if higher crude prices persist.

For Kolkata residents, the unchanged Kolkata fuel prices matter beyond the pump. Fuel is a direct cost for private vehicles and commercial transport, while diesel also feeds into the operating expenses of goods movement, buses, construction activity and other urban services. A prolonged increase can therefore work its way through supply chains and eventually affect household budgets. The current stability comes despite fluctuations in international crude markets. On August 24, Brent crude was around $93.17 a barrel after declining by $1.22, while US West Texas Intermediate fell by about $1.20 to $85.86. The movements followed a period of stronger oil prices and renewed concerns around disruptions to energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. That disconnect between international crude and retail pumps is important for understanding Kolkata fuel prices.

Domestic rates do not necessarily respond immediately to every movement in global oil markets. Retail pricing also reflects the rupee-dollar exchange rate, refining costs, taxes and dealer margins, among other factors. This means consumers can see stable prices even when the underlying energy market is moving sharply.Kolkata’s current rates have also remained broadly unchanged through August so far. The city’s petrol price has stayed at ₹113.51 a litre, while diesel has remained at ₹99.82 a litre. Available daily price data shows no movement in either rate between August 23 and August 24.For the city’s economy, the immediate effect is therefore one of cost stability rather than relief. Stable pump prices can help households, delivery operators and small businesses plan expenses, but they do not remove wider exposure to global energy shocks.

The next pressure point will be whether international crude remains elevated and how currency movements, taxation and other domestic pricing factors evolve. For a city dependent on extensive road-based mobility and supply networks, sustained fuel stability would help contain operating costs, while longer-term efficiency will increasingly depend on cleaner transport, stronger public mobility and reduced dependence on volatile fossil-fuel markets.
