Gurugram Kasan Waste To Energy Plant Gains Momentum
Gurugram’s long-delayed waste-to-energy project at Kasan village in Manesar is moving towards execution, with the civic administration working on an agreement with a government-owned entity. The project is intended to process fresh municipal waste closer to its source, potentially reducing dependence on the Bandhwari landfill and the long-distance movement of garbage across the city.
The proposed facility has remained in planning for years, but activity around the site has increased in 2026. A 20-acre parcel has been earmarked for the project, with the remaining 10 acres brought into the site after the first portion had already been secured and fenced. The civic body subsequently initiated fencing work for the additional land. The next step is expected to be an agreement that will establish the broad framework for developing the facility. Its final capacity, technical design, construction arrangement and operating model are yet to be settled. These decisions will determine how much waste the plant can handle and how effectively it can fit into Gurugram’s wider waste-management system.The need for additional processing capacity is becoming more urgent as the city continues to generate large quantities of municipal solid waste. Bandhwari remains under pressure from both fresh waste and accumulated material. A Haryana state action plan records around 16 lakh metric tonnes of waste at the site at the end of 2025 and targets substantial reduction during 2026.
The landfill’s environmental burden also extends beyond the physical waste mountain. Earlier official and regulatory records have highlighted the scale of material accumulated at Bandhwari and the continuing need for biomining and scientific processing. Recent reporting has put the remaining legacy waste at higher levels depending on the assessment date and methodology. For residents, however, a new Kasan waste to energy plant should not be viewed simply as a replacement for landfill disposal. Its environmental performance will depend heavily on how waste is segregated, what material is actually sent for energy recovery and how emissions and residual ash are managed. This is particularly important because waste-to-energy facilities can face environmental concerns when mixed waste is burned without effective segregation and pollution controls. The proposed project will therefore need transparent environmental safeguards, reliable monitoring and clear systems for handling non-combustible material.
The location also requires attention to neighbourhood impacts. Recent assessments of potential waste-management sites in the wider area have identified proximity to homes as a planning concern, underlining the importance of buffer zones, traffic management and public-health safeguards. For Gurugram, the immediate milestone is no longer simply identifying land. The focus now shifts to whether the Kasan waste to energy plant can be designed as part of an integrated system that prioritises segregation, recycling, material recovery and responsible disposal before energy generation.
