Mumbai Metro Monorail Connectivity Takes Major Step

Construction is advancing on what is expected to become Mumbai’s first elevated public travelator skywalk, creating a direct connection between the underground Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) at Mahalaxmi and the Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail station. The project is designed to reduce transfer time between the two stations and improve multimodal connectivity in one of the city’s busiest transport corridors. The moving walkway will span the approximately 700-metre gap between the metro and monorail stations, replacing a relatively long surface-level transfer with a grade-separated pedestrian connection. Unlike escalators, the bidirectional travelator allows commuters either to walk or remain stationary while being transported, making it particularly useful for senior citizens, passengers carrying luggage and people with reduced mobility.

Transport planners view the Mahalaxmi travelator skywalk as an important test case for integrating different public transport systems in Mumbai. The city’s expanding metro network is expected to generate significant interchange demand, and reducing transfer friction is considered essential for encouraging greater use of public transport and lowering dependence on private vehicles. Officials involved in the project indicated that the skywalk is also being planned with future integration in mind. The longer-term objective is to create a three-way interchange linking Metro Line 3, the Mumbai Monorail and Mahalaxmi suburban railway station, potentially turning the area into a major multimodal hub connecting north-south metro travel with east-west monorail services and the suburban rail network. The project is progressing even as the monorail system undergoes a major technical upgrade. Services on the nearly 20-kilometre fully elevated corridor connecting Chembur with South Mumbai have remained suspended since September 2025 following repeated operational issues. Authorities are currently installing a new Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system before services resume, with the upgraded control system expected to improve reliability and operational efficiency.

Urban mobility experts say the Mahalaxmi travelator skywalk reflects a broader shift in transport planning from simply building new corridors to improving the quality of interchanges between existing systems. International experience shows that seamless transfers can significantly increase public transport ridership by reducing walking distances, improving accessibility and making journeys more predictable. The initiative also aligns with Mumbai’s wider strategy of creating integrated transit nodes across the metropolitan region. Similar interchange projects are being developed at other locations, including upcoming metro stations that will provide direct links with monorail or suburban rail services.

As passenger volumes continue to rise across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, infrastructure that shortens transfer times and improves accessibility is becoming increasingly important. If successfully implemented, the travelator-equipped skywalk could become a model for future pedestrian connections between metro, rail and other mass transit systems, supporting a more connected, efficient and commuter-friendly urban transport network.
