Delhi Elevated Corridor Could Redesign Key South Delhi Route
New Delhi: Delhi has approved a ₹1.97 crore feasibility study for a proposed elevated road along Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, opening the first formal stage of a project aimed at easing persistent congestion across one of South Delhi’s busiest traffic corridors. The proposed five-kilometre route could eventually create a signal-free connection between the Vasant Kunj area and the Outer Ring Road.
The project is significant because the existing route is interrupted by multiple signals, junctions and traffic cuts. The proposed alignment would begin near Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj and pass through areas including Kishangarh, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Sanjay Van, the Qutub Institutional Area and Ber Sarai before connecting towards the Outer Ring Road. However, the elevated road is not yet a construction project. The feasibility study will determine whether the proposal is technically workable, financially viable and environmentally acceptable. It will also examine existing and projected traffic volumes, construction costs, engineering requirements and the likely impact on surrounding areas. The study comes at a time when Delhi’s infrastructure expansion is increasingly being tested against the limits of land availability, environmental sensitivity and rising travel demand.
An elevated structure may reduce delays at surface-level intersections, but its wider value will depend on how it interacts with pedestrian movement, public transport, cycling routes and the surrounding urban landscape. Urban planners often caution that faster vehicle movement alone does not necessarily translate into better urban mobility. For residents, students, workers and visitors travelling through South Delhi, the final design will determine whether the project reduces daily travel stress or simply shifts congestion to another junction. The treatment of crossings, bus access and walking routes will therefore be as important as the road’s engineering design. The South Delhi elevated road could also influence development pressures along a corridor that already connects major residential, institutional and commercial zones.
Better connectivity may improve access to employment and services, but long-term planning will need to prevent infrastructure-led growth from increasing pressure on green areas and existing neighbourhoods. A consultancy will be selected through a tendering process to prepare the detailed assessment. The final decision on construction will depend on the findings of that report. For now, the South Delhi elevated road remains a proposal under evaluation. The next phase will determine whether the project can deliver smoother movement while balancing traffic efficiency with environmental safeguards and the everyday needs of the people who use the corridor.
