Hyderabad Transport Plan Advances New Six Lane Flyover

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has proposed a new Hyderabad flyover project to strengthen transport connectivity between the Old City and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, as authorities continue expanding road infrastructure to address increasing traffic demand in the southern part of the city. The proposal is currently awaiting administrative approval from the state government.

The planned six-lane grade separator will extend for approximately 2.08 kilometres, connecting Mylardevpally, Katedan Junction and the Shamshabad Road. Designed to ease congestion at one of the city’s busiest intersections, the project is expected to improve travel efficiency for commuters using the corridor for daily travel as well as airport access. Urban mobility experts note that southern Hyderabad has experienced rapid growth in residential, logistics and industrial activity over the past decade, placing sustained pressure on existing road infrastructure. Katedan Junction has emerged as a critical traffic node linking the Old City with the airport corridor, making capacity enhancement a priority for improving regional connectivity. The proposed Hyderabad flyover project is expected to benefit commuters travelling from several eastern and southern neighbourhoods, including LB Nagar, Uppal, Karmanghat and adjoining areas, by providing a more direct route towards Shamshabad. Improved traffic flow could reduce travel delays, enhance freight movement and strengthen connectivity to the airport, which serves as a major gateway for business and tourism.

Transport planners, however, emphasise that grade separators should form part of a broader multimodal mobility strategy rather than a standalone solution. Integrating road projects with public transport systems, pedestrian infrastructure and intelligent traffic management can help maximise long-term benefits while limiting congestion from induced vehicle demand. Infrastructure specialists also highlight the importance of incorporating sustainable urban design into major transport projects. Effective stormwater drainage, landscaping, noise mitigation measures and safe pedestrian crossings can improve resilience while reducing the environmental impact of expanding road infrastructure. According to municipal officials, the project will move to the tendering stage after receiving the required administrative clearances. Construction timelines will be finalised once approvals and procurement processes are completed.

As Hyderabad continues to expand, strategic investments in transport infrastructure will remain essential to supporting economic activity and improving urban mobility. Experts suggest that combining projects such as the proposed flyover with integrated land-use planning and sustainable transport policies can help the city accommodate future growth while maintaining efficient, safe and climate-resilient mobility networks.
