Hyderabad BRICS Forum Advances Responsible AI Cooperation

Hyderabad: Scientists and policy leaders from BRICS member countries gathered in Hyderabad to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can accelerate sustainable development while strengthening scientific cooperation across emerging economies. Hosted at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, the forum placed responsible AI at the centre of discussions on climate resilience, healthcare, agriculture and disaster management.

The BRICS Science Academies Forum brought together representatives from member nations alongside partner countries to examine how collaborative research and technology sharing can address common development challenges. The meeting comes as governments increasingly view AI as a strategic tool for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals while reducing technological disparities between developed and developing economies. Participants highlighted the need for AI systems that are transparent, ethical and accessible, particularly in regions facing resource constraints. Experts noted that building inclusive AI ecosystems will require stronger international cooperation, open scientific exchange and policies that ensure emerging technologies benefit society without widening digital inequalities. Discussions identified five priority sectors where AI could deliver significant public value. These include advanced manufacturing, healthcare, climate resilience, agriculture and disaster risk management. Researchers emphasised that AI-driven innovations can improve decision-making, strengthen predictive capabilities and enhance the efficiency of public services, supporting more resilient and sustainable urban and rural communities.

Climate adaptation emerged as a key theme during the forum. Scientists highlighted AI’s growing role in weather forecasting, environmental monitoring and risk assessment, enabling governments to respond more effectively to climate-related disasters. Delegates also discussed how AI-powered tools can improve agricultural productivity, optimise resource use and strengthen food security in countries increasingly affected by climate variability. Healthcare experts outlined opportunities for AI to support disease screening, medical research and clinical decision-making, while manufacturing specialists discussed the technology’s potential to accelerate material discovery and improve industrial productivity through smarter production systems. The forum also reinforced the importance of strengthening scientific partnerships among Global South nations. Delegates called for greater collaboration in research, data sharing and technology development to build locally relevant AI solutions that respond to regional economic, environmental and social priorities.

The meeting concluded with discussions on a joint statement that will be presented at the upcoming BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation Ministerial Meeting. The document is expected to outline a shared roadmap for advancing ethical AI, expanding scientific cooperation and promoting sustainable innovation across member countries. As AI becomes an increasingly important driver of economic transformation, experts believe initiatives such as the Hyderabad forum demonstrate how international scientific collaboration can help emerging economies develop technologies that support inclusive growth, climate resilience and sustainable urban development.
