DDA Clears Encroachments, Restores Order in East Delhi’s Usmanpur

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has successfully addressed concerns over illegal encroachments by fish sellers in Usmanpur, East Delhi, marking a significant achievement in urban management and environmental compliance. Responding to a plea filed in April 2022 citing foul odours and health hazards from waste dumping at the fish market on the Yamuna floodplain, the DDA reported its actions before the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

In its submission dated July 5, the DDA informed the NGT of the removal of illegal encroachments spanning from Shastri Park’s zero Pushta to Pushta number three of Old Usmanpur (Garhi Mandu). This included dismantling structures occupied by illegal fish sellers who had encroached upon DDA land, contributing to environmental and traffic congestion issues in the area. Efforts included repairing boundary walls and installing a gate to regulate access to the plaza area, part of the redevelopment initiative aimed at restoring order and hygiene standards. The DDA emphasized its ongoing vigilance to prevent any resurgence of illegal activities, maintaining strict control to deter unauthorized gatherings of fish sellers on-site.

Acknowledging the broader implications, the DDA proactively engaged with multiple agencies, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the National Highways Authority of India, and local law enforcement, to enforce compliance and prevent future encroachments on floodplain lands. This collaborative approach underscores a concerted effort to uphold regulatory standards and ensure public health and safety. The DDA’s swift action aligns with its mandate to safeguard urban spaces while promoting sustainable development practices. By addressing encroachment issues decisively, the authority has set a precedent for effective governance and environmental stewardship in Delhi’s dynamic urban landscape.

This proactive stance not only mitigates immediate environmental concerns but also strengthens regulatory frameworks to uphold the integrity of public spaces amidst evolving urban challenges. The DDA’s commitment to maintaining the sanctity of floodplain areas underscores its role in fostering resilient and sustainable urban ecosystems across the national capital region.
