Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved higher reimbursement limits for digital devices used by elected councillors while simultaneously reinforcing oversight of road restoration following underground utility works. The twin decisions reflect the civic body’s focus on strengthening digital governance alongside improving urban infrastructure management.
The revised policy increases financial support available for mobile phones and computer equipment used by councillors in carrying out administrative responsibilities and citizen engagement. Civic officials said the changes recognise evolving technological requirements and the growing dependence on digital platforms for communication, documentation and public service delivery. As part of the update, the corporation has also shifted from reimbursing individual mobile phone bills to a standardised mobile connectivity plan for officials. Municipal governance specialists note that common digital service plans can improve cost control, simplify administration and create more consistent communication systems across civic departments. The decision comes as urban local bodies across India continue expanding digital governance initiatives, with elected representatives increasingly relying on smartphones, laptops and online platforms to access municipal records, monitor development projects and interact with residents. Investments in digital tools are widely viewed as supporting faster decision-making and more efficient public administration when accompanied by transparent procurement and accountability mechanisms.
Alongside the technology-related approvals, the Standing Committee reviewed road infrastructure conditions across Ahmedabad. Officials identified more than 150 locations considered susceptible to surface settlement because of previous excavation for water supply, drainage and other underground utility installations. The civic administration has directed departments to intensify monitoring of these sites while carrying out backfilling and watering to reduce the risk of road subsidence. Authorities also instructed engineering teams to ensure that future excavation projects follow prescribed restoration standards before roads are reopened for public use.
Urban infrastructure experts have frequently highlighted inadequate restoration after underground utility works as a major contributor to premature road deterioration, increased maintenance costs and safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians.
