Tiruvannamalai New Bus Terminus Improves City Mobility

Tiruvannamalai’s ₹34-crore new bus terminus is moving towards full-scale operations as the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation prepares to shift all town and long-distance services to the facility from July 13. The transition is expected to reshape daily mobility in the temple town by reducing terminal congestion, improving commuter convenience and creating a more organised transport network.

The new bus terminus, located along the Chennai–Tindivanam Road corridor, began handling selected services earlier this year. However, limited operations meant passengers travelling to several nearby towns still depended on the older terminal located close to the Arunachaleswarar temple area. The complete transition is expected to reduce the need for passengers to move between multiple boarding points, a challenge that particularly affects elderly travellers, women commuters and visitors unfamiliar with the town. Urban planners note that integrated transport facilities can improve accessibility while supporting safer and more efficient movement patterns. The older bus stand, developed decades ago, operates within a smaller land parcel and faces capacity constraints due to rising passenger demand. With Tiruvannamalai attracting significant religious tourism and regional commerce, transport infrastructure has become increasingly important for managing seasonal travel pressure.

The new bus terminus has been designed with expanded passenger facilities, including dedicated bus bays, waiting areas, digital information systems, parking spaces, public conveniences and accessibility features for people with disabilities. CCTV surveillance and improved passenger management systems are also expected to strengthen safety at the facility. Officials indicate that the upgraded terminal will accommodate a larger volume of services compared with the existing arrangement. At present, hundreds of buses operate across both terminals, creating operational challenges during peak periods. Consolidating services at one location could help streamline traffic movement around the town centre.Beyond transport efficiency, the shift could influence the surrounding urban economy by improving connections between Tiruvannamalai and neighbouring districts. Better regional connectivity often supports local businesses, tourism-related activities and employment opportunities while reducing unnecessary travel delays.

Infrastructure experts highlight that future mobility planning should focus not only on expanding transport capacity but also on ensuring sustainable urban growth. Efficient public transport hubs can reduce dependence on private vehicles, lower congestion and contribute towards cleaner mobility systems when supported by reliable services.nThe move to activate the new bus terminus marks a significant step in modernising Tiruvannamalai’s transport infrastructure. Its long-term success will depend on regular maintenance, effective traffic management around the facility and continued improvements in public transport accessibility for all sections of society.
