Gujarat has commissioned its first urban cable stayed flyover at Bhat Circle, marking a significant addition to the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar transport network. The new elevated corridor is expected to improve traffic movement at one of the region’s busiest intersections while supporting long-term mobility across the fast-growing urban corridor linking the twin cities.
The 1.48-kilometre flyover has been developed through a joint investment by the state’s Roads and Buildings Department and the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). Positioned at Bhat Circle, the structure addresses congestion where the Gandhinagar–Ahmedabad Airport Road intersects with the Sardar Patel Ring Road, an area that experiences heavy commuter and commercial traffic throughout the day. Under the revised traffic arrangement, vehicles travelling between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar will use the elevated carriageway, while traffic moving along the Ring Road will continue beneath the flyover. Transport planners expect the redesigned junction to reduce conflict points, improve traffic circulation and shorten travel times for daily commuters. Alongside the inauguration, the state government also initiated the widening of the existing bridge across the Narmada Main Canal between Koba Circle and Bhat Circle. The expansion project will add two new three-lane bridges, increasing the crossing from six to twelve lanes to accommodate future traffic growth and strengthen connectivity along this strategic corridor.
The Ahmedabad cable stayed flyover forms part of a wider programme of road infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving accessibility across the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar metropolitan region. As residential, commercial and institutional development expands around the twin cities, transport infrastructure is increasingly required to support higher travel demand while maintaining network efficiency. Urban mobility experts note that grade-separated junctions can significantly improve corridor performance by reducing delays at major intersections. However, they also emphasise that flyovers should be integrated with public transport, pedestrian infrastructure and cycling facilities to ensure balanced and sustainable urban mobility rather than encouraging greater dependence on private vehicles. The Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar corridor continues to evolve as one of Gujarat’s principal economic and administrative regions, making reliable transport infrastructure critical for business activity, logistics and daily commuting. Investments that combine increased road capacity with improved traffic management can contribute to greater productivity while reducing congestion-related delays.
As vehicle volumes continue to rise across the metropolitan area, infrastructure planners will increasingly need to complement road expansion with multimodal transport solutions, intelligent traffic management systems and climate-resilient urban design.
