New Delhi is preparing for a major overhaul of its road mobility network as authorities assess the possibility of converting 25 additional high-density corridors into signal-free routes, a move that could significantly reshape daily commuting and urban air quality in the capital.

The plan, now under review, signals a wider push towards reducing congestion-driven emissions and improving transport efficiency. The proposed expansion comes at a time when Delhi’s transport system is under growing pressure from rising vehicle ownership, construction-led urban sprawl and persistent bottlenecks across arterial roads. Officials are currently studying several stretches to determine whether engineering changes such as U-turn loops, underpasses and lane redesigns can support uninterrupted traffic flow. Urban planners tracking the development say the Signal Free Corridor plan could reduce idle time at junctions, which remains one of the biggest contributors to fuel wastage and roadside pollution in Indian metros. If implemented effectively, the model may also improve travel predictability for logistics operators, emergency services and daily office commuters.

Among the corridors being assessed are stretches connecting outer ring roads, key industrial clusters, airport-linked zones and older city districts where congestion remains severe during peak hours. Transport experts note that these corridors are not just mobility routes but critical economic connectors linking markets, warehouses, transit hubs and residential clusters. The latest proposal follows positive feedback from existing signal-free experiments already underway in parts of the city. According to senior traffic officials, the next phase will depend on feasibility reports, road width, pedestrian safety requirements and integration with public transport systems. For Delhi, the Signal Free Corridor strategy is increasingly being viewed through a larger sustainability lens. Fewer stops and starts can lower tailpipe emissions, reduce noise pollution and improve roadside environmental conditions, especially in tree-lined stretches where dust accumulation has become a concern.

However, mobility researchers caution that signal-free roads alone cannot solve congestion unless accompanied by stronger bus networks, better last-mile connectivity and pedestrian-friendly crossings. The inclusion of RERA-linked urban planning conversations has also widened the scope of the discussion. Analysts say transport upgrades increasingly influence real estate valuations, housing demand and commercial development patterns, making corridor planning relevant for both infrastructure and property sectors. As feasibility studies move ahead, Delhi’s next challenge will be balancing faster vehicle movement with safety, accessibility and long-term climate resilience. If executed with citizen-first design principles, the expanded network could become a key test case for cleaner and more efficient urban mobility in India.
