Telangana has been advised to closely manage reservoir storage as lower-than-expected water levels in key drinking water sources raise concerns over supply security during the ongoing monsoon season. The advisory from the Central Water Commission (CWC) highlights the importance of prudent reservoir operations to safeguard domestic water availability, particularly for fast-growing urban centres that depend heavily on surface water resources.

The caution follows the Commission’s routine assessment of major reservoirs across the state, during which the Singur Reservoir on the Manjira River was identified as holding significantly lower storage than its seasonal norm. The reservoir is also undergoing repair works, adding further importance to careful management of available water resources. Singur is a critical component of Hyderabad’s drinking water network, supplying millions of litres of treated water each day to western parts of the city, including the Financial District, Cyberabad and several expanding residential neighbourhoods. Any prolonged reduction in reservoir storage could increase pressure on the city’s integrated water supply system, particularly if rainfall remains below expectations or inflows do not improve. The Central Water Commission has advised state authorities to prioritise essential water requirements while maintaining continuous monitoring of reservoir levels.
