Gujarat is witnessing one of its weakest starts to the southwest monsoon in recent years, with rainfall remaining significantly below seasonal norms across most districts. The delayed advance of the monsoon has pushed the state into a severe rainfall deficit, raising concerns over water security, agriculture and urban climate resilience as the peak monsoon season begins.
Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates that Gujarat has recorded a rainfall deficit of nearly 79% during June, placing it among the country’s most rainfall-deficient states. Only a few states, including Meghalaya, Manipur and Chhattisgarh, have reported similarly large shortfalls, with rainfall deficits exceeding 60%, a category classified by meteorologists as “large deficient”. Ahmedabad mirrors the state’s challenging situation. Against a normal June rainfall of 98.2 mm, the district has received only 22.8 mm, translating into a 77% deficit. Within the municipal limits, rainfall has been even lower, with the city recording an average of around 11 mm during the month. Weather experts describe the month as one of the driest Junes experienced by Ahmedabad in recent years.
The delayed arrival of the southwest monsoon has been a key reason behind the rainfall shortage. Under normal climatic conditions, the monsoon covers the entire state by the end of June. This year, however, the northern limit of the monsoon had only progressed up to Surat by June 30, leaving large parts of Gujarat awaiting sustained rainfall. The prolonged dry spell is beginning to influence multiple sectors. Agricultural experts note that delayed rainfall can postpone Kharif crop sowing, increase dependence on irrigation and affect farm productivity if adequate precipitation does not arrive soon. Reduced rainfall also limits groundwater recharge and reservoir inflows, increasing pressure on water resources ahead of the peak summer demand cycle. Urban centres such as Ahmedabad face additional challenges. Higher temperatures combined with limited rainfall intensify the urban heat island effect, increasing electricity demand for cooling while placing additional stress on municipal water supply systems.
Climate specialists emphasise that rapidly growing cities must strengthen water conservation, stormwater management and climate-resilient infrastructure to better withstand increasingly erratic weather patterns. Meteorologists expect rainfall activity to improve as the southwest monsoon advances further into Gujarat over the coming days. However, experts caution that the distribution and intensity of rainfall during July will play a critical role in determining whether the state can recover from the substantial June deficit. For policymakers and urban planners alike, the current season highlights the growing importance of adaptive water management and resilient urban planning in an era of increasing climate variability.
