A modest decline in daytime temperatures has offered temporary relief to Ahmedabad after an extended spell of intense heat, signalling an early transition towards monsoon conditions even as humidity continues to remain high across the city.
The city’s maximum temperature settled at 39.6°C, marking the first time since mid-June that daytime temperatures fell below the 40°C threshold. Although still above the seasonal average, increasing cloud cover and intermittent drizzle indicate changing atmospheric conditions as the southwest monsoon gradually advances across Gujarat. The improvement was not limited to Ahmedabad. Several major urban centres across the state also witnessed lower daytime temperatures compared with previous days. However, humidity remained elevated, creating uncomfortable weather conditions despite the reduction in heat intensity. Surendranagar remained the only major location in Gujarat where temperatures crossed 40°C, while cities including Vadodara, Surat and Gandhinagar experienced comparatively milder conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the southwest monsoon has progressed up to Surat and is expected to advance further across Gujarat during the week. Forecasts suggest light to moderate rainfall for parts of South Gujarat and coastal Saurashtra in the coming days, with heavier rainfall likely towards the end of the week as weather systems strengthen. Rainfall activity has already begun to increase in several districts. More than twenty talukas reported measurable precipitation, indicating improving monsoon momentum after one of the state’s driest starts to the season. Meteorologists believe broader rainfall coverage could help reduce persistent heat, improve soil moisture and support agricultural activities that have been delayed by below-normal June rainfall.
For Ahmedabad, the evolving weather pattern carries wider urban significance beyond immediate thermal comfort. Lower temperatures can reduce electricity demand for cooling, ease heat-related public health risks and improve outdoor working conditions. At the same time, the onset of rainfall highlights the importance of efficient stormwater management, drainage maintenance and flood preparedness in a rapidly expanding metropolitan area. Climate experts note that increasingly erratic transitions between extreme heat and monsoon rainfall underscore the need for resilient urban infrastructure capable of managing both temperature extremes and intense precipitation. Investments in green spaces, sustainable drainage systems and climate-responsive planning are becoming essential components of long-term urban resilience. With the monsoon expected to strengthen over the coming days, authorities will closely monitor rainfall distribution and intensity. A sustained improvement in precipitation could help narrow Gujarat’s rainfall deficit while providing much-needed relief to residents, agriculture and water resources after weeks of unusually hot and dry conditions.
