Delhi Ozone Pollution Raises Urban Health Risks

As Delhi waits for the monsoon to arrive, a different environmental emergency has tightened its grip on the National Capital Region. Ground-level ozone, an invisible but highly reactive pollutant, has emerged as one of the most persistent air quality threats this summer, exposing millions of residents to heightened respiratory and health risks.

Unlike particulate pollution, which dominates public debate during winter, ozone pollution builds during high temperatures when emissions from vehicles, industrial units and construction-linked activities chemically react under sunlight. This makes the summer months increasingly hazardous for dense urban regions such as Delhi-NCR, where traffic and industrial clusters continue to expand. Recent environmental assessments show Delhi recorded ozone pollution above permissible levels on nearly every observed day between early March and mid-May. Several monitoring stations across NCR also registered repeated exceedances, with industrial and peri-urban zones in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad emerging as key hotspots. For urban planners, this marks a critical shift in how Indian cities must approach clean air policy. Ground-level ozone is not directly emitted; it is formed through nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds.

These are deeply linked to transport systems, fossil fuel dependence and industrial growth sectors central to NCR’s economic engine. Health experts warn the effects are immediate and often underestimated. Exposure can inflame lung tissues, aggravate asthma and increase breathing distress, especially among children, outdoor workers and elderly populations. Reports of headaches, eye irritation and reduced lung function are becoming more frequent during heatwave periods, making ozone pollution both a climate and public health concern. The economic implications are equally significant. Lost productivity due to illness, higher healthcare costs and crop damage in peri-urban agricultural belts are becoming harder to ignore. Studies indicate wheat yields in north Indian farming zones can decline sharply due to prolonged ozone exposure, raising fresh questions around food security and urban-rural sustainability.

Urban climate specialists say the absence of a dedicated ozone management strategy reflects a gap in India’s clean-air framework, which remains heavily focused on particulate matter. A multi-pollutant approach, they argue, is now essential as Indian cities face hotter summers and changing atmospheric conditions. At the same time, the India Meteorological Department has indicated that monsoon conditions are likely to develop over Delhi within the next few days. While rainfall may temporarily ease pollution levels, experts caution that seasonal relief cannot replace structural reforms. For a region already grappling with rapid urbanisation, heat stress and infrastructure pressure, tackling ozone pollution will require cleaner mobility, tighter industrial controls and more climate-resilient planning. Without that shift, Delhi’s summer air may remain just as dangerous as its winter smog.
