Kolkata is set to strengthen its urban transport network through the planned introduction of a Kolkata Water Metro system, with the state also preparing to participate in the Centre’s Sagarmala 2 programme. The twin initiatives signal a broader effort to modernise river-based mobility, improve maritime infrastructure and diversify transport options in one of India’s most densely populated metropolitan regions.
The proposed Kolkata Water Metro would integrate the Hooghly River into the city’s public transport network, offering an alternative to increasingly congested road corridors. Officials have indicated that the state is preparing infrastructure proposals valued at around ₹22,700 crore over the next five years, covering inland waterways, coastal infrastructure, fisheries, island development and port-linked facilities.
