Pune Lake Restoration Adopts Floating Cleaning Technology
Pune: Pune has taken a technology-led step towards restoring its urban lakes with the successful field trial of a specialised Floating Spider Machine designed to remove invasive aquatic vegetation. Tested at Jambhulwadi Lake, the amphibious equipment is expected to strengthen long-term waterbody management by improving ecological health, enhancing water quality and supporting sustainable conservation of the city’s lakes and river systems.
The demonstration focused on clearing extensive growth of water hyacinth, one of the most damaging invasive aquatic plants affecting freshwater ecosystems across India. The machine, capable of operating on both land and water, efficiently navigated the lake while removing dense vegetation that restricts water flow and disrupts natural aquatic habitats. Municipal officials described the trial as part of a broader effort to modernise environmental management using specialised equipment capable of handling difficult terrain. The Floating Spider Machine is engineered to access deep sections of lakes, narrow channels and areas that are often beyond the reach of conventional excavation or cleaning machinery.
