India is preparing to introduce its first Vande Bharat Sleeper service on the Guwahati–Kolkata corridor, marking a significant expansion of premium long-distance rail connectivity across eastern and north-eastern India. The upcoming overnight service is expected to improve inter-city mobility, reduce journey fatigue and strengthen economic links between two major regional centres while signalling a broader shift towards modern passenger rail infrastructure.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper service represents the next phase in the country’s semi-high-speed rail programme, extending the platform beyond daytime travel into overnight inter-city operations. Railway authorities have completed testing and certification, with the corridor selected as the inaugural route because of its strategic importance for passenger movement, tourism and business travel.Unlike conventional overnight trains, the new service has been designed with upgraded passenger amenities, improved ride quality and enhanced safety systems. Publicly available information indicates the rake will comprise 16 air-conditioned coaches across First AC, Two Tier AC and Three Tier AC categories, providing capacity for more than 800 passengers.
