Mumbai Air Quality Improves During Monsoon

Mumbai recorded the strongest air quality performance among major cities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) during June, benefiting from seasonal monsoon conditions that helped improve atmospheric dispersion and reduce pollution levels. While all major urban centres maintained breathable air throughout the month, differences in dominant pollutants and local emission sources revealed contrasting environmental challenges across the metropolitan region. An assessment of daily air quality data for the first 27 days of June shows that the Mumbai air quality index entered the ‘good’ category on eight occasions, outperforming neighbouring Thane and Navi Mumbai. Navi Mumbai registered seven days of ‘good’ air quality, while Thane recorded only three days within the cleanest Air Quality Index (AQI) classification.

Despite fewer days in the highest category, Thane demonstrated relatively stable air quality throughout the month by consistently remaining within the ‘satisfactory’ AQI range. Mumbai and Navi Mumbai also maintained satisfactory conditions for most of June, ensuring that none of the three cities experienced air pollution levels categorised as moderate or poor during the period. Environmental analysts attribute the improved regional air quality partly to the onset of the southwest monsoon, which increases rainfall, strengthens atmospheric mixing and suppresses airborne dust. However, pollutant patterns continued to differ across the metropolitan region, reflecting the influence of local land use, transport activity and construction intensity. The Mumbai air quality profile displayed a more varied mix of pollutants compared with neighbouring cities. While particulate matter remained a recurring contributor, nitrogen dioxide and ground-level ozone were also identified as frequent pollutants within the island city. These emissions are commonly associated with dense traffic corridors, industrial activity and chemical reactions involving vehicular exhaust under urban atmospheric conditions.

In contrast, particulate matter measuring less than 10 microns in diameter (PM10) remained the dominant pollutant across Thane and Navi Mumbai for most of the month. Urban planners note that PM10 is often linked to road dust, large-scale construction activity, excavation work and movement of heavy vehicles, highlighting the environmental pressures accompanying rapid infrastructure expansion across the metropolitan region. Experts suggest that improving air quality in fast-growing urban centres requires interventions that extend beyond seasonal weather conditions. Better construction site management, stricter dust-control measures, cleaner transport systems, enhanced public mobility and expanded urban green spaces can help reduce particulate pollution while improving public health outcomes. The contrasting pollution patterns also reinforce the importance of city-specific environmental strategies. While Mumbai may need stronger action to address transport-related emissions and ozone formation, neighbouring urban centres could benefit from tighter regulation of dust-generating activities associated with infrastructure and real estate development.

As the monsoon season progresses, continued monitoring will be essential to determine whether cleaner air conditions can be sustained. Long-term improvements in regional air quality will depend not only on favourable weather but also on coordinated urban planning, low-emission infrastructure and stronger environmental governance across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
