The state administration has directed civic teams to accelerate unfinished stormwater drain works across the metropolitan region, with a clear emphasis on preventing repeat flooding in densely populated neighbourhoods. The move comes as climate volatility intensifies rainfall patterns across southern India, raising pressure on urban systems already stretched by rapid expansion. Municipal officials overseeing Chennai’s flood preparedness reviewed multiple infrastructure interventions this week, including canal desiltation, pond restoration and repairs to flood-protection embankments. The focus, however, remains firmly on closing gaps in the city’s fragmented stormwater drain network an issue urban planners say has long undermined the efficiency of rainwater evacuation. For residents, the implications are immediate. In low-lying zones and newly urbanised suburbs, incomplete or disconnected stormwater drain systems often result in waterlogging, transport disruption and property damage during heavy spells.
Experts argue that while physical expansion of drainage infrastructure is necessary, maintenance and hydrological integration are equally critical. A senior civic official said more than 100,000 silt traps designed to intercept waste and sediment will undergo continuous cleaning as part of the monsoon preparedness plan. These chambers are considered essential to preventing blockages that can choke the wider stormwater drain network during peak rainfall. Parallel desiltation is also underway across Chennai’s 44 major waterways, which function as the city’s natural flood channels.
