Mumbai is poised to strengthen its coastal transport network after the Maharashtra government approved a ₹1,722.40 crore road project designed to improve connectivity between the western suburbs and the island city. The new corridor is expected to complement the under-construction Versova–Bandra Sea Link, reduce travel times and enhance the efficiency of one of India’s busiest urban transport systems while raising fresh questions around rehabilitation, environmental safeguards and long-term mobility planning. The approved project involves constructing a 3.55-kilometre connector linking the Bandra Fort end of the Versova–Bandra Sea Link with the Savarkar Sea Bridge. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation will execute the project as part of the wider coastal mobility programme aimed at easing congestion on Mumbai’s heavily burdened road network.
Government estimates indicate the corridor will accommodate nearly 3,500 passenger vehicles every hour. Once operational, journeys between Worli and Fort during peak traffic periods could be reduced from around 45 minutes to less than 10 minutes, while travel between Fort and Versova is expected to decline substantially, creating a more seamless east-west and north-south transport connection. The Mumbai coastal connector forms an important extension of the larger Versova–Bandra Sea Link, a strategic infrastructure project intended to improve regional connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Urban transport experts believe integrated road links can improve travel efficiency by eliminating missing connections between major infrastructure assets, thereby allowing existing investments to operate closer to their intended capacity.The financial outlay covers civil construction, land acquisition, taxes and associated project costs. It also includes allocations for social rehabilitation and environmental management, recognising the broader impacts of large-scale urban infrastructure.
Around 40 informal residential structures are expected to require rehabilitation, while dedicated provisions have been made for compensation to affected fishing communities and environmental mitigation measures during construction. Urban planners note that balancing transport expansion with ecological protection has become increasingly important for coastal cities facing rising climate risks. Mumbai’s shoreline supports sensitive marine ecosystems while also functioning as critical economic infrastructure. Consequently, future transport investments are likely to face greater expectations regarding biodiversity conservation, coastal resilience and transparent rehabilitation practices. The wider Versova–Bandra Sea Link project remains under construction, with authorities targeting completion in 2028. Progress reports indicate construction continues, although implementation remains one of the state’s largest and most technically complex urban infrastructure programmes.
