Mumbai is set to introduce renewable energy infrastructure into its public parks through a new Mumbai Solar Tree project, marking another step in the city’s effort to integrate climate-conscious technology with everyday civic amenities. The initiative aims to transform selected gardens into energy-producing public spaces, reflecting a broader shift towards embedding sustainability within urban infrastructure rather than treating it as a standalone environmental programme. The municipal corporation has announced plans to install specially designed solar structures resembling trees across public gardens. These installations will generate electricity while preserving recreational space, allowing parks to serve both ecological and functional roles within the city’s public realm.

Unlike conventional rooftop solar systems, Solar Trees are vertical structures that support photovoltaic panels in a tree-like arrangement.
