Kolkata is set to advance a new phase of urban mobility planning with the proposed introduction of a Water Metro system under the Centre-backed Sagarmala 2 programme. The initiative positions inland waterways as a larger part of the city’s transport network while linking maritime infrastructure investment with economic development, logistics efficiency and climate-conscious mobility planning. The move could significantly influence how one of India’s most densely populated metropolitan regions manages future growth.
Public officials have indicated that the state is preparing a multi-year pipeline of maritime and transport projects that include a Water Metro network, jetty upgrades, coastal infrastructure and riverfront improvements. The programme is expected to channel substantial investment into water-based connectivity while strengthening links between urban centres, ports and economic corridors.
