Mumbai Tree Removal Clears Major Infrastructure Projects
Mumbai has cleared proposals affecting more than 1,000 trees to facilitate major transport and urban redevelopment projects, highlighting the growing challenge of balancing infrastructure expansion with the preservation of the city’s rapidly diminishing green cover. The approvals, granted through the civic Tree Authority, are expected to accelerate housing renewal and mobility improvements while intensifying scrutiny over the environmental costs of large-scale urban transformation. The largest share of the approved tree impact is associated with a proposed elevated road corridor linking Chedda Nagar in Ghatkopar with Anand Nagar in Thane. Project assessments identify more than 600 trees within the construction footprint, with a portion earmarked for removal and the remainder scheduled for transplantation. The corridor is intended to strengthen regional connectivity and reduce congestion along one of the busiest commuter routes linking Mumbai with its neighbouring metropolitan areas.
Another significant component of the approvals relates to the Mumbai tree felling requirements for the redevelopment of Motilal Nagar in Goregaon, one of the city’s largest planned housing renewal projects. Environmental surveys conducted across the redevelopment area identified a substantial tree population, with several hundred expected to be directly affected during construction. A combination of tree transplantation and selective removal has been proposed to facilitate the project while retaining part of the existing vegetation. Redevelopment activity in Bandra will also require relocation and removal of additional trees, taking the cumulative impact across the three projects beyond the 1,000-tree mark. Civic officials maintain that transplantation has been prioritised wherever technically feasible, with compensatory plantation measures forming part of the statutory environmental conditions attached to project approvals. The decisions have renewed debate over the role of urban forests in rapidly densifying cities. Environmental planners argue that mature trees provide ecosystem services extending beyond aesthetics, including reducing urban heat, absorbing carbon emissions, improving air quality and mitigating stormwater runoff during increasingly intense monsoon events.
These functions become particularly valuable as climate change amplifies heat stress and extreme rainfall across Mumbai. Critics have also questioned the long-term effectiveness of transplantation programmes, pointing to varying survival rates of relocated mature trees. Urban ecology experts note that while compensatory plantations help restore green cover over time, newly planted saplings require years before delivering ecological benefits comparable to established trees. They have called for greater emphasis on project design that avoids unnecessary tree loss during planning stages. At the same time, transport specialists argue that infrastructure upgrades and large-scale housing redevelopment remain essential to accommodate Mumbai’s growing population, improve travel efficiency and replace ageing residential precincts. The challenge, they suggest, lies in integrating environmental safeguards into project execution rather than treating development and conservation as competing objectives.
As the approved schemes progress, the effectiveness of Mumbai tree felling mitigation measures will remain under close public scrutiny. Their implementation could shape future expectations around how India’s largest metropolis delivers essential infrastructure while protecting the natural assets that contribute to long-term urban resilience, public health and liveability.
