Chennai Accessibility Gaps Burden Tambaram Commuters
Daily commuters using Tambaram railway station in Chennai continue to encounter significant mobility challenges as the absence of elevators across platforms affects thousands of passengers, highlighting wider concerns around inclusive transport infrastructure in one of Tamil Nadu’s busiest railway interchanges.
Handling suburban and long-distance rail traffic, Tambaram serves as a critical gateway for southern Chennai and neighbouring districts. Yet, despite its importance, the station’s design continues to present difficulties for elderly travellers, persons with disabilities, families with children and passengers carrying luggage. Urban mobility experts note that accessibility is increasingly becoming a defining measure of transport quality rather than an optional amenity. Although escalators operate on parts of the existing foot overbridge, several platforms particularly those used by numerous express services remain dependent on conventional stair access. During peak hours, heavy passenger volumes often intensify congestion, making platform transfers physically demanding and raising safety concerns.
The issue assumes greater significance as Chennai pursues broader investments in public transport and transit-oriented development. Experts in inclusive urban planning argue that railway stations must be designed to accommodate all users, ensuring barrier-free movement and reducing the dependence on private vehicles. Such infrastructure improvements contribute to social equity while supporting low-carbon mobility goals.According to senior railway officials, retrofitting elevators onto the existing overbridge structure presents engineering and spatial limitations. Authorities have instead incorporated accessibility upgrades into an ongoing station modernisation initiative valued at approximately ₹24 crore.The project includes the construction of a new eight-metre-wide foot overbridge spanning all ten platforms. Plans also provide for nine elevators and ten escalators, intended to create seamless movement between platforms and improve passenger convenience. The upgraded facilities are expected to benefit not only regular suburban commuters but also long-distance travellers who rely heavily on the station.
Urban planners point out that the need for accessible transport infrastructure has become more pressing as Indian cities witness demographic shifts, including an ageing population and rising passenger numbers. Stations that fail to provide barrier-free access can inadvertently exclude vulnerable groups and compromise safety.The Tambaram station modernisation project therefore represents more than a capacity enhancement exercise. It reflects the growing expectation that transport assets must be people-centric and designed with inclusivity at their core. With construction progressing, attention will now shift towards timely completion and effective integration of the new facilities, which could redefine commuter experience at one of Chennai’s most important rail nodes and strengthen the city’s push towards more accessible and sustainable mobility networks.
