A major mobility upgrade in north Chennai is set to enter the construction phase after authorities cleared traffic diversions for a new rail overpass along Ennore High Road. The project is expected to address longstanding congestion issues affecting commuters and freight movement while improving links between the city centre and industrial neighbourhoods in the northern corridor.
Civic authorities are preparing to begin work later this month on a 448-metre structure crossing the railway line near the LC2A level crossing. Construction is scheduled to continue until the end of 2027, with traffic being redirected through alternative routes during the execution period. Estimated to cost about ₹75 crore, the Chennai Bridge Project is intended to improve movement between Wall Tax Road near Chennai Central and densely populated localities including Tiruvottiyur and Manali. Urban planners note that north Chennai’s road network has experienced increasing pressure from industrial activity, port-linked logistics and growing residential development, making uninterrupted east-west connectivity increasingly important.
Officials associated with the project indicated that the structure will feature a 10-metre carriageway supported by crash barriers, along with a dedicated service road, pedestrian facilities and an integrated stormwater drainage system. Such additions are considered essential for enhancing resilience against flooding and ensuring safer access for non-motorised users, an aspect that has gained importance in infrastructure planning across coastal cities. Land acquisition requirements for the scheme include both privately owned and government parcels. Experts say timely coordination among agencies will be critical to maintaining construction schedules and limiting disruption to surrounding communities and businesses. The Chennai Bridge Project also forms part of a broader effort to eliminate level crossings inside the corporation limits. Transport specialists have long argued that grade-separated corridors can significantly reduce travel delays, fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, particularly in high-density urban areas where traffic queues contribute to air pollution and economic losses.
Parallel investments are already underway at other railway crossings in Tiruvottiyur and Wimco Nagar, while another bridge near Korukkupet is expected to commence shortly. Once completed, the network of overpasses could reshape mobility patterns across north Chennai and support more efficient movement of people and goods. While the infrastructure upgrade promises long-term benefits, urban experts emphasise that effective traffic management, pedestrian safety and sustainable drainage systems will determine how successfully the new assets serve communities. As Chennai continues to modernise its transport network, balancing connectivity with resilience and citizen-centric design remains an equally important challenge.
