Maharashtra has cleared a major package of railway-linked infrastructure works aimed at reducing congestion, improving commuter safety and strengthening connections between rapidly expanding urban centres. The first phase of approvals covers 65 projects across the state and forms part of a broader strategy to modernise transport corridors while gradually eliminating traditional railway level crossings. The decision reflects growing pressure on transport infrastructure as cities continue to expand around railway networks. Increasing road traffic, rising commuter volumes and the expansion of suburban and regional economies have intensified demand for safer and more efficient crossings at rail corridors. Urban planners view grade-separated infrastructure such as overbridges and underpasses as essential to reducing delays, improving emergency access and lowering accident risks.
The approved projects include a mix of railway overbridges, pedestrian bridges and road underpasses intended to separate rail and road movement. By removing points where trains and vehicles intersect at ground level, authorities aim to improve traffic flow while enhancing public safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. The initiative is part of a wider Railway Infrastructure Projects programme being implemented through the state’s dedicated rail development framework. Officials have identified more than a hundred potential interventions, with the current approvals prioritising locations experiencing high traffic volumes and comparatively lower land acquisition challenges. Transport experts note that this approach can accelerate project delivery while maximising benefits for commuters. A significant portion of future investments will be concentrated in urban and peri-urban regions where transport demand is increasing most rapidly. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is expected to receive the largest share of proposed urban rail-related works, followed by Pune and Nagpur. Additional projects are planned across emerging regional centres including Nashik, Amravati, Sangli, Kolhapur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
