NEW DELHI: As the monsoon approaches, the Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to mitigate waterlogging issues across the city, particularly targeting nine subways and five flyovers in south Delhi identified as prone areas.
Recognizing the recurring challenge posed by heavy rains, PWD has deployed specialized teams equipped with water pumping sets at critical locations such as Chirag Dilli, IIT-Delhi, and Panchsheel flyovers. Each team, comprising pump operators, electricians, wiremen, and support staff, aims to ensure swift drainage and minimal disruption to public services between June and September.
“In addition to addressing immediate waterlogging concerns, PWD has revamped automatic stormwater management systems at key sites like Pragati Maidan, Minto Bridge, Azad Bhawan, and ITO,” stated a PWD spokesperson. These upgrades follow instances of flooding and system failures during previous monsoons.
Further enhancing operational efficiency, PWD plans to implement real-time online monitoring of major pump houses, starting with Mathura Road, to preemptively manage water levels and respond promptly to emergencies.
“The proactive measures include collaborative efforts with the power department to secure backup power for pumping operations during outages caused by floods,” highlighted the spokesperson, underscoring the department’s commitment to uninterrupted service delivery during adverse weather conditions.
Despite ongoing efforts, challenges remain as the desilting of 1,037 stormwater drains along PWD-managed roads was delayed beyond the May deadline. PWD reassures the public of prompt response to complaints, aiming to resolve issues within eight working hours.
Moreover, quick response teams have been strategically stationed across Delhi to swiftly address any emergent waterlogging situations, reinforcing PWD’s readiness for the monsoon onslaught.
“With Delhi’s urban landscape vulnerable to seasonal rains, PWD’s proactive stance in bolstering infrastructure and deploying advanced monitoring systems signifies a step towards resilient urban governance,” concluded the spokesperson, highlighting the importance of sustainable infrastructure management amidst climate challenges.
