Bihar AIIMS Darbhanga Project Gets Fresh Funding Support

The long-awaited AIIMS project in Darbhanga has received a fresh financial boost, with the central government approving additional funding to accelerate construction of the proposed medical campus and hospital facilities. The move is expected to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across northern Bihar, where access to advanced medical treatment remains limited despite rapid urban growth.

Officials familiar with the development said the additional allocation will support faster execution of academic blocks, hospital infrastructure and essential services at the under-construction campus. The project, originally approved under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, is designed as a large medical college-cum-hospital complex with hundreds of beds and multiple speciality departments, making it one of the largest healthcare infrastructure investments in the region. The Darbhanga AIIMS project has been under discussion for several years, with formal approval granted in 2020 and land subsequently transferred for construction. According to official project details, the institute is planned on a large campus near the city and is expected to include medical education facilities along with a high-capacity hospital capable of serving patients not only from Darbhanga but also neighbouring districts and parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Urban planners say the importance of the project goes beyond healthcare alone. Large medical campuses often act as catalysts for urban development by attracting housing, transport infrastructure, retail services and private healthcare investment in surrounding areas.

In tier-two cities such as Darbhanga, where population growth has been steady but civic infrastructure expansion has lagged behind, such projects can significantly reshape local economic activity and employment opportunities. The new funding approval also reflects a wider national push to expand high-quality medical infrastructure outside major metropolitan centres. Over the past decade, multiple new AIIMS institutions have been sanctioned across the country as part of an effort to reduce pressure on older facilities in large cities and make advanced healthcare more accessible in smaller urban regions. Policy analysts say projects like the one in Darbhanga are particularly important in eastern India, where healthcare infrastructure has historically developed more slowly than in western and southern states. However, experts caution that the long-term success of the Darbhanga AIIMS project will depend on consistent funding, timely construction and integration with local transport and urban services. Without adequate connectivity and supporting infrastructure, even large healthcare facilities often struggle to achieve their full impact.

If the latest funding approval translates into faster on-ground progress, the project could become a turning point for healthcare access in northern Bihar. For residents of Darbhanga and nearby districts, the coming months are likely to be critical in determining whether the project finally begins to move from planning to large-scale construction.
