Gurugram Southern Peripheral Road Flyover Project Moves Ahead

Urban mobility along one of Gurugram’s busiest development corridors may soon see a major upgrade as authorities move forward with plans to construct a large elevated road along the Southern Peripheral Road flyover corridor. The metropolitan development authority has initiated the tendering process for the project, which is expected to significantly ease congestion and improve connectivity between key transport networks in the rapidly expanding southern districts of the city. The planned infrastructure project will stretch approximately 4.2 kilometre between the national highway corridor and a major junction that links Gurugram with Sohna. Officials say the proposed Southern Peripheral Road flyover aims to create uninterrupted vehicle movement across a route that has witnessed sharp traffic growth due to residential expansion, commercial activity and regional highway connectivity.

Urban planners note that the Southern Peripheral Road has evolved into a strategic east–west mobility spine for Gurugram over the past decade. The corridor connects several high-density residential sectors, office clusters and emerging townships, making it one of the most heavily used roads in the city’s southern growth belt. According to officials familiar with the project planning, the elevated structure will include multiple traffic lanes designed to allow vehicles to travel without signal interruptions. Supporting infrastructure will include parallel service roads to manage local traffic flow, along with ramps at key intersections to ensure vehicles can safely enter and exit the elevated corridor. Two large-grade interchanges are expected to form critical components of the Southern Peripheral Road flyover design. One will connect directly with the national highway network, strengthening regional connectivity for commuters travelling between Delhi, Gurugram and other parts of the National Capital Region. The second interchange will provide seamless integration with the Gurugram–Sohna elevated road, a corridor that has already improved travel time between the city’s southern districts and employment hubs.

Transport experts believe such infrastructure upgrades are increasingly necessary as Gurugram’s population and vehicle ownership continue to grow. Rapid real estate development along the Southern Peripheral Road has attracted thousands of new residents in recent years, while commercial spaces and business parks have further increased daily commuter traffic. Industry analysts say the corridor has become one of the most important real estate growth zones in the city, linking residential neighbourhoods with office districts and industrial zones. Improved traffic flow along the Southern Peripheral Road flyover could therefore influence both property demand and economic activity in surrounding sectors. However, urban mobility specialists caution that road expansion alone cannot fully address long-term congestion challenges. Integrated transport planning—including public transit, pedestrian infrastructure and sustainable mobility solutions—will remain essential for building resilient urban transport systems.

Officials involved in the project say the elevated corridor is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Gurugram’s infrastructure as the city continues to expand southwards. If implemented efficiently, the project could reduce travel delays across the corridor while supporting economic growth in one of the National Capital Region’s fastest developing urban districts.
