Ahmedabad is preparing for one of the largest clean public transport upgrades in western India as the municipal administration moves ahead with the introduction of 1,000 electric buses across the city’s main transit systems. The initiative, being implemented through the city’s municipal transport undertakings, is expected to significantly expand the Ahmedabad electric bus network while advancing the city’s transition towards lower-emission urban mobility.
The new fleet will operate across two major public transport services the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) and the bus rapid transit network managed by Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited. The buses will be deployed under the central government’s electric mobility programme designed to accelerate the adoption of battery-powered public transport in Indian cities. Officials involved in the project indicate that the upcoming fleet will include buses of two different capacities suited for varied route requirements. Shorter nine-metre vehicles will primarily serve conventional urban routes under AMTS, while longer twelve-metre buses will be deployed across both AMTS and the dedicated BRTS corridors that connect key parts of the city.
Urban mobility planners say the expansion marks an important step in scaling the Ahmedabad electric bus ecosystem. The city currently operates several hundred public buses, including a smaller but growing electric fleet. With the addition of the new vehicles, the share of zero-emission buses in the city’s public transport network is expected to increase sharply. The buses will be operated through a Gross Cost Contract model, a system increasingly used by Indian transit authorities. Under this approach, private operators provide and maintain the vehicles while the public transport authority manages routes and ticketing. Urban transport economists say the model allows cities to scale fleets quickly without bearing the full operational risk. A consortium of mobility companies has been selected to supply and operate the vehicles after emerging as the lowest bidder during the tender process. Transport officials say the cost structure has been finalised on a per-kilometre basis for bus operations, reflecting the operational efficiency expected from electric vehicles compared with traditional diesel fleets.
Alongside the vehicle procurement, the project includes upgrades to depots and the creation of charging infrastructure required to support large-scale electric bus operations. Experts emphasise that reliable charging networks and maintenance systems are essential for sustaining electric mobility programmes in rapidly expanding cities.
