Winter Brings Spectacular Bird Migration to Pune’s Vetal Tekdi

Pune is once again witnessing a mesmerising winter migration of diverse bird species, as Vetal Tekdi becomes a prominent stopover for uncommon migratory birds. With the onset of winter, Maharashtra’s natural habitats such as the forests in the Western Ghats and key spots like Nandur Madhmeshwar in Nashik and Bhigwan near Pune are attracting avian visitors from regions as distant as Africa and the Himalayas. Abundant water, favourable weather, and food availability in these habitats following the recent monsoon make Maharashtra an ideal sanctuary for these birds. Among the species making an appearance at Vetal Tekdi are members of the cuckoo family, such as the Common Cuckoo and Jacobin Cuckoo, travelling from the African continent, and other species, including the Blue-throated Flycatcher and Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, seeking refuge from Northeast India and the Himalayas.

The annual migration has become a significant event for the birding community in Pune, drawing birders of all ages to Vetal Tekdi to catch a glimpse of the season’s arrivals. The upcoming Vetal Tekdi Birding Marathon, organised by the Vetal Tekdi Bachao Kruti Samiti from 7th to 12th November, highlights the city’s commitment to conserving its avian diversity and natural heritage. This event, which saw enthusiastic participation last year, aims to document the birds’ arrival and engage the public in sustainable tourism, fostering a connection with the region’s ecological wealth.

This migration event underscores the importance of sustainable urban development in conserving Pune’s ecological treasures. By promoting awareness of these visiting species, the birding marathon exemplifies efforts to balance civic growth with the preservation of natural habitats. Pune’s migration season, when rare species such as the Eastern Orphean Warbler, Blue Rock Thrush, and Siberian Stonechat make a brief stopover, draws comparisons with other regions’ eco-tourism practices, offering residents a unique, eco-conscious experience within their city.

In the spirit of sustainability, initiatives like the Vetal Tekdi Birding Marathon serve as a reminder of the need for continued conservation efforts in urban landscapes. With increasing city expansion, preserving green spaces like Vetal Tekdi is vital to maintaining Pune’s natural diversity and providing a crucial sanctuary for migratory birds each year. These efforts reflect a larger commitment to sustainable urban living, ensuring Pune remains a vital waypoint for migratory birds and an accessible natural haven for its residents.
